Craniosacral Therapy
Craniosacral work has a rich lineage in osteopathic philosophy. Aspects of the approach were first articulated by William Garner Sutherland, DO in the early 1900’s. Sutherland noticed that, contrary to the current teachings of the time, the skull and its seams appeared to be designed for articulation and subtle movement. After many years of research, Sutherland demonstrated the existence of motion in the cranial bones, what is now called the craniosacral rhythm. This rhythm is expressed through the spinal fluid that connects the brain to the spinal cord. Sutherland argued that the craniosacral rhythm can help us to locate areas of structural or emotional blockage, and that efforts to release those blockages can move the body towards balance and health.
Craniosacral therapy is a hands-on modality designed to balance the cerebrospinal fluid that surrounds the brain and the spinal column. The work is extremely light. Therapists touch various parts of the body, called ‘listening stations,’ and then follow the palpated rhythm until it drops or changes. The listening stations are the ankles, the thighs, the midriff, the shoulders and the head. By following the rhythm and noting where it stops, therapists can locate areas of structural or emotional blockage. Once these blockages have been detected, noninvasive techniques are used to encourage resolution and release.
Many craniosacral techniques derive from the notion that traumas are recorded in the tissue. For example, a car accident or years of emotional abuse could leave a record in the tissue that is experienced as a blocked energy flow. Because these blockages are frequently the locus of physical pain, craniosacral therapies are designed to locate and dissolve them, while all the while respecting the body’s own wisdom in working toward the healing process.
Craniosacral therapy uses light, non-invasive touch to assist the body’s natural ability to balance and heal. The receiver is fully clothed and lies on a massage table. Loose, comfortable clothing is recommended. Many clients experience a very deep and profound relaxation. This state allows the body to realign and heal itself.
